KUMITE: Hurricane was the first non-sanctioned mixed martial arts event held by the Human Cockfighting League. The event took place on October 29, 2012 from the Super Happy Family Sporting Dragon House Buffet Arena in Nagasaki, Japan. This event was part of a live ItsRainingMeng 10-hour marathon stream during Hurricane Sandy, which hit much of the northeastern United States.
This event featured fifteen non-sanctioned mixed martial arts bouts. All fights were part of a 16-man Light Heavyweight KUMITE Tournament. Fights took place under Japanese "KUMITE" rules, which differ from standard HCL shows in many ways. Fights contested of two rounds, with the first being ten minutes, and the second round five minutes. Elbows are not allowed, but soccer kicks, knees, and stomps to downed opponents are allowed. Fights that go the entire 15 minutes are judged as a whole, rather than round by round.
The tournament featured four light heavyweights who had not yet debuted in HCL, including one (Father Chad DiGreco) who made it to the finals. The other three were Rondo Studebaker, Nick Belmont and Stanley Barcliffe. Winning the KUMITE meant winning four fights in one night. Due to the nature of this tournament, HCL has agreed that results in this, and future KUMITE shows, will be recognized by HCL, but not included in fighters' win-loss records. Competitors in this tournament will have their records shown separate from their HCL sanctioned MMA records.
The first ever KUMITE was won by Peter Oliveira, who had never won in HCL before, but defeated Father Chad DiGreco in the finals. The tournament was full of memorable moments. Ishmael Bowerstern scored a first round upset by knocking out JC Hunite. There was an impressive debut by clown-for-hire Stanley Barcliffe. But most impressive of all, Father Chad DiGreco won his first three fights by knockout with a hammer fist from the ground, showing his potential knockout power.
